What Places Can I Visit On My Own?

Exploring Cusco and its surroundings on your own can be a rewarding experience and will allow you to enjoy the city and its historical sites at your own pace. Just make sure you are prepared and follow local recommendations for a safe and enjoyable visit.

1. Cusco’s Historic Centre

Plaza de Armas: This is the heart of Cusco and an excellent place to start your exploration. Here you can admire the colonial architecture and enjoy the local life.

Cusco Cathedral: Located in the Plaza de Armas, this cathedral is famous for its baroque architecture and its valuable collection of religious art.

Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús: Another architectural gem in the Plaza de Armas, known for its impressive façade and ornate interior.

2. San Blas Neighbourhood

San Blas: Known for its cobblestone streets and artisan workshops, this neighbourhood is ideal for strolling and discovering art galleries and souvenir shops.

Iglesia de San Blas: A small church in the neighbourhood that is known for its wood carvings.

3. Nearby Ruins

Sacsayhuaman: An impressive Inca fortress located in the hills near Cusco. You can walk there from the historic centre or take a taxi.

Qenqo: Archaeological site near Sacsayhuaman, known for its labyrinths and stone carved altars.

Puka Pukara: An Inca fortress also located near Cusco. It is possible to visit it in combination with Qenqo and Sacsayhuaman.

4. San Pedro Market

San Pedro Market: A bustling local market where you can find fresh produce, typical food and handicrafts. It is an interesting place to experience daily life in Cusco.

5. Pre-Columbian Art Museum

Museo de Arte Precolombino: Located near the Plaza de Armas, this museum offers an excellent collection of pre-Columbian art from all over South America.

6. Archaeological Sites of the Sacred Valley Route

Ollantaytambo: An ancient Inca village and an important archaeological site located in the Sacred Valley. It is accessible by public transport or taxi from Cusco.

Pisac: Known for its Inca ruins and vibrant market. It can also be reached by public transport from Cusco.
